A weekly newsletter of the Worker-communist Party of Iraq 8 October 2003/ No 5

Three injured in clashes between police and unemployed workers in Baghdad

Peaceful demonstration of unemployed workers in Sadoun Street, downtown Baghdad on October 1, was brutally confronted by the police. Three people sustained injuries as a result of shots being fired by the police to disperse the demonstrators. The demonstration was organized by the Union of Unemployed in Iraq (UUI).

The US troops stationed nearby did not intervene to prevent the violence perpetrated by the police. The Iraqi police cordoned off the demonstrators in an attempt to prevent other unemployed from joining in.

The police opened fire into the demonstrators and forced them to abandon their action under showers of bullets.

Oil Company Workers’ Council protest against police misconduct

On September 21, 2003, the workers from the Northern Oil Company staged a demonstration to protest against the police conduct towards workers and staff of the company. Ahmed Uraiby, an activist from the Northern Oil Company’s workers council, was detained for six hours for exposing and confronting police brutality. His arrest sparked off a protest action in which more 400 workers took part.

The workers were enraged by the conduct of the company’s official Trade Union. The company manager supported by the US troops negotiated with the protesting workers. He succumbed to the demands of the workers and declared the Company’s Workers Council as the official representative of the company’s workers.

In a further development on September 23, the company manager met with Usama Sameer Abbod, Ismael Mohammed Ali and Ahmed Radhi Uraiby, the representatives of the Worker Council and agreed to free ten members of the workers’ council of their daily duties to organize the ranks of the workers.

Layla Mohammed of the Organization of Women’s Freedom in Iraq visits Al Huda residential complex in Baghdad

A delegation of the Organization of Women’s Freedom in Iraq led by Layla Mohammed and Iman Lateef visited Al Huda residential complex on September 27. The delegates met with a group of women and discussed their problems in the complex and how to solve them. Layla Mohammed briefed the women about the OWFI, its formation, goals and approaches to tackle women’s conditions in Iraq. Then, she talked about the importance of unity and organization for the cause of women and to defend their rights and freedom. 38 women joined the OWFI. It is worth mentioning that a group of Islamites made an attempt to prevent women from attending the gathering. OWFI’s supporters took on the Islamite and forced them to retreat unceremoniously.

Massive demonstration of the unemployed in Basra

On 1st, October, a mass protest march took place in Basra in protest against the failure of the governor of Basra to meet their demands presented to him a month ago.

The unemployed massed in front of the governorate offices and chanted slogans demanding jobs opportunities. The governor succumbed to the pressure and asked the unemployed to send their representatives to negotiate. The demonstrators chose four representatives and charged them with the task of negotiating with the governor. After a round of negotiation with the governor who kept procrastinating, the demonstrators were outraged and attacked the governorate offices. The governor together with members of city council managed to escape.Police started firing haphazardly to disperse the demonstrators who insisted on their demands. The attitude of the administration of the occupying allies concerning the demands of the unemployed is a reflection of the policies adopted towards the people of Iraq. A policy of total disregard for the rights and welfare of people. They resort to heavy-handed measures to deal with very basic demands. This a crystal-clear evidence of the failure of USA and its
puppet administrations constituted of parties and groups aligning with it.

25000 inhabitants of Kanispika district of Sulaimania are without basic amenities

On the night of October 1, 2003 Hussein Salih and Jamal Mohsen from the Sulaimaniya committee of WCPI held a meeting with five representatives of inhabitants Kanispika, a district of 5000 dwellings and approximately 25000 people. Their discussion centred on lack of basic amenities including clean water, electricity and health care provision.

It is worth mentioning that a few days earlier the residents of kanispika had demonstrated against the head of the municipality of the city of Sulaimaniya. The head of the municipality agreed to meet with the representatives of the protestors. Four women were elected to negotiate with the officials of the municipality. The meeting ended with the officials agreeing to supply the district with clean water and electricity. The issue of health care remained unresolved.

Al Muthanna district police forces assaulted defenseless residents

In September 2003, a number of police officers attacked and opened fire at the residents of a neighborhood near the ministry of oil in Baghdad. They broke into a number of houses, assaulted residents, leaving two women with broken arms. In a savage manner reminiscent of the Baathist armed gangs they broke into people’s homes destroying household furniture and belongings. They ended their assault with the arrest of 8 youth. Following this incident the Worker-communist Party of Iraq sent a delegation from its Baghdad Branch Committee including Falih Magtouf, a lawyer, and Qasim Hadi to visit the neighborhood and investigate the attack. Then, the delegates visited the police station and met with the arrested youth. After checking the police files, it was discovered that the arrests were done without a warrant from a judge.

The next day, another delegation comprising of Sameer Adil, Zimnaco Aziz, WCPI politburo members, Falih Magtouf, Qasim Hadi and Nizar Ali, members of Baghdad Branch Committee of WCPI met with the parents and relatives of the detainees. Sameer Adil in speech to the relatives of the detainees and the crowed that had gathered re-affirmed WCPI’s commitment to defend people and utilize its resources to safeguard their lives and livelihood. On 25th September, due to the Worker-communist Party of Iraq efforts, the 8 detained youth including an eleven-year old boy were released.

Following this incident the Worker-communist Party of Iraq has organized checkpoints and security posts to secure areas near its headquarters.
