TO ALL FREEDOM-LOVING PEOPLE, AND TO ALL LABOUR, STUDENT, AND HUMAN RIGHTS ORGANIZATIONS ACROSS THE WORLD

As you may be informed, in a pre-emptive attack on independent student organizations the Islamic regime in Iran arrested dozens of politically active students prior to the Student’s Day (December 7), practically a day of protest against the status quo during decades of student struggles. However, despite the said arrests, the students celebrated their day by holding protest actions in different forms on a national level. In the course of those actions more students were arrested. At present there are forty-odd student activists from various parts of the country held in detention in the notorious Evin prison in Tehran, as well as in other known and unknown places across the country.
The detained students have been subjected to torture and cruel treatment. The news of torture has gravely alarmed their families and the people at large. The trumped-up charges brought against the students have aggravated the widespread concerns for their lives. Among other things, the Ministry of Intelligence has released a communiqué with regards to the Leftist students claiming that “the troublemakers had already obtained slingshots, collected rocks, and made sonic hand grenades” or “the detainees were found in possession of a considerable amount of alcoholic beverages, immoral literature, heretical books, and leaflets with sacrilegious content.” Also, the state-run Raja-news website has published reports stating “following extensive nation-wide investigations of the universities, the core communist cell, with connections abroad (read: connections with opposition organizations abroad), has been discovered and arrested. The said communist cell plotted to raise riots at universities on December the 7th through violent provocations, using incendiary devices such as Molotov cocktails and hand grenades ... etc.”
The fake and fabricated nature of such reports is obvious to all. However, these are heavy accusations used by the regime throughout its 30-year-long existence to line up thousands of freedom-seeking people against its firing squads. Today, it resorts to the same accusations against the students. This has, naturally, caused grave worries for the lives of the detained students among their families and the people at large. We simply have to thwart this conspiracy of the régime and free the imprisoned students by means of our international solidarity.
There is presently a massive protest movement underway for the release of the students at family, university, and town levels in various parts of Iran. However, what is needed for a powerful fight for their immediate and unconditional release, as well as the release of all other political prisoners in Iran, is an extended global solidarity. We, therefore, call upon all individuals, institutions and organizations defending human rights to join our international campaign for the release of the recently arrested students and all other political prisoners languishing in the dungeons of the Islamic regime in Iran.
It should also be noted here that besides the detained students a large number of labor activists - among them the internationally well-known Mahmud Saalehi, Mansur Osaanlou and Ebraahim Madadi - as well scores of women who have resisted the regime’s current wave of mass intimidation on the pretext implementing its Hijab and other Islamic codes are in jail too.
An immediate demand of Iranian people is the unconditional release of the recently arrested students, as well as all other political prisoners. Lend them your extensive international support so that they can open the prison gates, release their political prisoners, and take their just struggles against the barbaric Islamic regime one step further.

Dear Nora and Jen,
Jan. 16, 08

Thought I should write to update you with regards to the latest developments in the case of the socialist students detained in Iran. Besides summoning more Leftist and other student activists to the so-called “diciplinary committee”s which is still underway, there were two developments on Mon., Jan 14:
1- All the parents of the detained students got to visit them. This has obviously been granted by the regime under international pressure. However, the detainees have not yet gotten to visit with their lawyers.
2- The agents of Ministry of Intelligence raided the house of a student by the name of Mohammad Purabdollaahi and took him, along with 8 other students, with them. The names of the newly arrested students are as follows: 1- Mohammad Purabdollaahi; 2- Kaave Abbasiaan; 3- Anaahitaa Hoseyni; 4- Bitaa Samimizaade; 5- Amin Ghazaai; 6- Sorush Saabet; 7- Sorush Dashtestaani; 8- Bijan Sabbaagh; 9-Mortezaa Eslaahchi.
3- On Tue., Jan 15, another student, Masi Shirvaani was kidnapped in the street by Intelligence agents. The whereabouts of the newly arrested students is still unkown.

The tug of war, in this case granting partial visitation rights and, at the same time, arresting and kidnapping more activists, is something we are quite used to by now! In every case the regime backs off one step under international presurre, only to take two steps forward in the direction of oppression in order to show off power and send out a message of we-are-still-in-the-saddle. And this proves only one thing: the international community has to keep pushing this anti-human regime back relentlessly. So, please regard one and all letter of support for the students, or any other form of protest, as a spotlight turned on the ruling criminals in Iran. In the midst of the contented silence of the Western governments, it could clearly be said that, firstly, “international community” seems to be, unfortunately, limited to us, the people only (we only need to remember that a Canadian photo-journalist, Zahra Kazemi, was killed under torture in Iran, the cronor that had examined her body sought political asylom in Canada, he listed a whole scroll of dirrenet kinds of toture, including “brutal rape”, she had been subjected to, the Iraninan regime was forced to admit that she was killed under interrogation by a “rouge agent” in the Ministry of Intelligence, and all the Canadian government did was politely asking the Iranian government to “hold an open trial” for the guy “so that the Canadian Ambassador could attend the trial sessions”, and that was the end of the case as far as the life of a Canadian citizen was concerned!), and, secondly, shedding light on the acts of criminals almost seems to be the only thing we can do from overseas to rein these criminals back. The efficiency of latter should not, however, be under-estimated. That is, as I told Jen in our discussion last week, the single doctrine on the basis of which the whole Amnesty International has grown from a one-man initiative to the global AI of today!

So, please, may I ask you to pass this update to Manda Aziz also, so she can also kindly write a letter of support, as well as pass it on to all other provincial offices of the Federation.

Thank you very much.

In solidarity,
Jamshid Hadian

I am writing on behalf of over 22,000 students at the University of Manitoba regarding the treatment and safety of students in Iran.

The University of Manitoba Students’ Union (UMSU) condemns the actions of Iranian Authorities against Iranian students. UMSU condemns the violent actions taken by Iranian Authorities which includes the kidnappings and torture of the students detained. Further, the detention of students involved in the peaceful public demonstration, is unjustified and reprehensible.

The University of Manitoba Students’ Union calls upon the Iranian Government to release all students detained in recent weeks if they are prisoners of conscience, held solely on account of the peaceful exercise of their rights, and for any others to be tried promptly and fairly, in accordance with international fair trial standards, on recognizably criminal charges or else released; to make assurances that none of those arrested are subject to torture or other ill treatment; and to ensure that these detainees have unfettered access to relatives, legal representation, and any medical attention they may require.

The mistreatment of students for standing up for their rights does not go unnoticed by the international community, and I urge you to follow international standards and end the persecution of students and activists.

The whereabouts of the following students needs to be made public and for them to be released unconditionally to their family and friends:

- Mehdi Gerailoo
- Saeed A. Habibi
- Abed Tavancheh
- Payman Piran
- Majid Ashrafnejad
- Behrooz Karimzadeh

I look forward to you earliest response and immediate action to address the above concerns. Furthermore, I look forward to hearing about the immediate release of the students and all others that have been detained without just cause.

Sincerely,
Garry Sran

Dear President Ahmadinejad

On behalf of the 55,000 members of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers I am writing you over concerns about recent repression of students. We know that dozens of politically active students were arrested prior to the December 7 student day. It is our understanding that forty or more students from around Iran are being held at the despicable and notorious Evin prison and other locations..

We have also received reports of torture and cruelty. The authorities appear to be covering their actions by claiming, without evidence, that these students were violent and acquiring weapons. The Ministry of Intelligence has admitted that it fears the circulation of ideas by suggesting that “heretical books and leaflets with a sacrilegious content” were found in the possession of students. It is chilling to observe any society that relies on intelligence agencies to define morality and heresy.

The old tactic of crying wolf, labelling communists as operating terror cells and inciting riots is an old discredited tactic that has been used elsewhere. We are familiar with the demonizing of those that have different views. It is also hard to separate the actions of the Islamic Sate with those of the United States in places like Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo. We hope that your government will not remain on this path.

We urge you to immediately and unconditionally release the prisoners as well as the labour activists you are holding and cease this transparent abuse of students and workers.

Sincerely,

Deborah Bourque

Latest developments:
1- Sixteen, out of the original total of forty-seven, students have been released on extortionate bails, in some cases running up to tens of thousands of dollars, mostly acceptable only in the form of putting up the parent’s houses deeds as collateral. The list of the names of those still in jail, taken from the student site Aavaaye Daaneshgaah (The Voice of Universities: http://avayedaneshgah.blogfa.com/ ) is as follows:
1-Arash Pakzad; 2-Anooshe Azadfar; 3-Ilnaz Jamshidi; 4-Mehdi Geraylu; 5-Nader Ehsani; 6-Said Habibi; 7-Bahrooz Karimizade; 8-Keyvan Amiri-Elyasi; 9-Nasim Soltanbeygi; 10-Ali Salem; 11-Mohsen Ghamin; 12-Ruzbeh Safshekan; 13-Ruzbehan Amiri; 14-Yaser Pirhayati; ِ15-Said Aghaamali; 16-Ali Kalaai; 17-Amir Mehrzad; 18-Hadi Salari; 19-Farshid Farhadi-Ahangaran; 20-Amir Aghaai; 21-Milad Omrani; 22-Soroosh Hashempur; 23-Farshad Doostipoor; 24-Sohrab Karimi; 25-Javad Alizade; 26-Mohammad-Saleh Ayuman; 27- Mehdi Allahyari; 28-Bahram Shojai; 29-Said Aghakhani; 30-Majid Ashrafnejad; 31-Peyman Piran
2- The following communiqué has been released on Jan 1, 08 by the parents of the jailed students who intend to hold a protest assembly in front of the Revolutionary Courts building in Tehran on Jan. 5, 08:
It has been one month. A month of difficult and cold nights in front of the notorious Evin prison, a month of the insults of the guards, the threats of the interrogator, the groundless accusations and promises. We are on this side and our sons and daughters are on the other side of the Evin walls, in dark and cold solitary cells. The same repetitive story of being blindfolded, night interrogation, sleeplessness, beating and foul language etc, etc.
Our sons and daughters are under the highest pressures because of having called for equality and freedom at university, a place which belongs to them and on a day which belongs to them, i.e., Iranian University Students’ Day and we, the families, are kept in complete ignorance of their situation, without any permission for them to visit us or their lawyers; and all this is done in utter boycott of the country’s media and press.
After this long time, we find a rally in front of the public prosecution of the revolutionary court in Tehran at 11 a.m. on Saturday Dey 15 (Jan 5) to let our voice be heard by our children through these cold and grey walls so that they can know that they are not alone, so that they can know that their families, their friends and all free people stand beside them and will not succumb until their complete freedom.
Seeking Committee for the Freedom of the University Students

3- Ruzbe Safshekan’s parents, drug store owners in Shiraz, have bravely put their jailed son’s picture, the list of all those still in prison, and a “WARNING” on the window of their store. These can be seen in the three pictures in the middle section of http://avayedaneshgah.blogfa.com/. According to this student site, dedicated to the news of students’ struggles inside the country as well as the news of the international support they get, this courageous, ingenious act has met with widespread support on the part of the people. The said WARNING reads:
Roozbeh Safshekan, engineer, poet, writer, and political science post-graduate student arrested on December 7 (Student’s day), 2007 must be released unconditionally. (Signed: Dr. Iraj Safshekan [father]; Dr. Taajolmolook Nowrooziaan [mother]).

Dear President Ahmadinejad,

The Ryerson Students' Union, representing all 24,000 full-time undergraduate and graduate students at Ryerson University in Toronto, Canada, is appalled to have learned of the arrest of 47 students and activists leading up to and on the National Day of Students.

While we understand that 16 of the original 47 have been released, we are disturbed that their release was only made possible by the payment of extortionate bail amounts. We are particularly horrified to hear accounts of torture and cruel treatment toward the detained students. We feel obliged to condemn your government’s detention of dozens of protesting students, and demand their immediate and unconditional release.

The National Day of Students is an important day commemorating three Iranian students who were shot to death by police while protesting the visit by then U.S. Vice President Richard Nixon to Tehran in1953. Students should have the right to attend University, demonstrate and protest free of fear of political retribution or incarceration.
The Islamic Republic of Iran should recognize the people’s rights to freedoms of expression, assembly, association, and strike as your people’s inalienable rights. At our Canadian Universities, students are free to peacefully protest the government of the day without fear of being incarcerated. We stand with our Iranian brothers and sisters in their attempts to exercise this freedom.

The Ryerson Students' Union, Local 24 of the Canadian Federation of Students, lends our supportive voice to those in Iran calling for the unconditional release of the recently arrested students.
